The La Honda Lyceum
This website is a suggestion, a vision for the future of the La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District. LHPUSD is in a unique position as the smallest district in San Mateo County based on student population, but the largest in geographic area. That geographic area includes some of the most beautiful landscapes in California: beaches, mountains, rolling green hills, deep forests, and lovely farms. Much of this nature is preserved by State & County Parks, and by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (MROSD), the Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST), and other organizations (private & public).
Juxtapose these glories of nature and human nature with the problems of a small student population. As many involved in LHPUSD will tell you, it's hard to offer all the courses, programs, and opportunities for young people in such a tiny school district. Thus, the purpose of this website is to propose a series of programs that will enhance LHPUSD, making it attractive to new families as well as other schools in the county, the state, the country, and yes, internationally. The rising tide of interest and involvement will lift the small boat of our student population, allowing us to better serve our kids and our community.
New classroom buildings are being put up at La Honda Elementary (LHE - one of the only two elementary schools in the district), thus making the existing classroom building available for repurposing. Here are some possibilities for the repurposing...
Call it "La Honda CREEC" or "La Honda STREAM" or something else, we have more than one watershed in LHPUSD, and this can be a watershed moment. We, as a school district, can take this opportunity to build more opportunities for our current and future students. Please check out the other pages for more details.

- Coincidentally, MROSD has just opened the La Honda Creek Open Space with a new public parking lot adjacent to LHE. This only adds to the thousands of acres of preserved open spaces & parks within LHPUSD. A Science Lab, part of a comprehensive environmental education program, is a natural fit.
- Pescadero has a thriving arts community with the South Coast Artist Alliance (SCAA) putting on an annual art show at the Pescadero Art & Fun Festival (PAFF) each year. The beautiful, north-facing windows in the old classroom building make an art studio and gallery another natural fit.
- Both Pescadero and La Honda have their own Historical Societies and Presidents who have participated in school programs in the past. Add science and art components, and a History Museum is another natural fit.
- The Maker Movement has made an impact in recent years, and given the resounding success of many hands-on, project-based-learning (PBL) programs, a studio/lab/makerspace could be a fourth room in the building. Save one for administrative office space, and the old classroom building can be successfully repurposed.
